The Crown Season 5 hits Netflix gold and renews royal frenzy
Los Gatos, California - The fifth season of The Crown has made it to number one in the global top 10 of English-language Netflix series in its first week after being released, seeing it soar even higher in popularity.
The Crown: Season 5 clocked up 107.4 million in streamed hours worldwide between November 9 and 13, according to Netflix's latest weekly hit list. It has prolonged the British royalty drama's status as one of the streaming platform's most popular shows.
The new season of The Crown was watched in more than 12 million households in just four days, according to Netflix. The 10 episodes, released the first week of November, are currently in the top 10 of the TV category in 88 countries.
The drama about the British royal family, which Netflix has repeatedly stressed is fictional, is number one in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.
The historical series revolves around the life of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II - the fifth season, like season three, started with completely new actors.
The main role of the monarch has been taken over by Imelda Staunton, following in the footsteps of Claire Foy as the young Queen, and Olivia Colman as a middle-aged Queen.
Season 5 is set in the 1990s and centers on the crumbling marriage between Diana and then heir to the throne – now King Charles III. It has sparked a wave of renewed chatter and both in-person and internet backlash directed at the royal family.
It also features Princess Di's most iconic fashions and crowned jewel replicas on display.
The show's writers have confirmed there is a sixth – and final – season on the way.
