HBO Max removes Westworld and other shows in shocking wave of decisions

New York, New York - The content purge by Warner Bros. Discovery is wreaking havoc at HBO Max as several popular TV shows are set to be removed from the platform entirely.

On Monday, Deadline reported that all four seasons of the sci-fi series Westworld are set to be removed from HBO Max. The news comes a month after the Emmy Award-winning series was abruptly canceled by HBO.

In an even harsher call, The Nevers has been canceled halfway through its first season. The second half of the series has already been filmed, but it's now unclear when, or if, the episodes will be released.

But wait – there's more. HBO has reversed its decision to renew Minx, canceling the comedy series while season two was quite literally in the process of filming. Production is expected to be completed anyway, but it's similarly unclear if the episodes will get to see the light of day.

All previously-released episodes of Minx and The Nevers will be pulled from HBO Max.

The moves have left fans, as well as members of the industry, in utter shock. The notion that a show could be canceled while the cast and crew are still filming, or even shortly after, it is pretty much unfathomable.

The creator of The Gordita Chronicles, which was also hit with this cancellation/removal one-two punch, tweeted, "Trying hard to not be bitter about this latest insult to injury, but real talk, it feels like an EX destroying your photos in an attempt to ERASE you from memory..."

So what exactly is the logic behind all of these shocking decisions?

Why is HBO Max pulling shows from the platform?

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has been pretty clear about the significant losses that the newly-merged company has faced. Per Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery is working to earn back $3.5 billion through cost-saving efforts.

Their methods of doing so have been controversial, to say the least.

In another shocking move, the upcoming Batgirl movie, featuring cinema icons Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton, was scrapped by Warner Bros. when it was already in post-production.

In August, HBO Max confirmed that it would remove 36 titles from its catalog. The decision was driven by a desire to cut out residuals owed for programs that weren't garnering enough viewers to make it worthwhile for the company.

However, ditching a series as famous as Westworld doesn't exactly make sense in the long run. In the age of streaming, pulling shows from these platforms carries a heavy weight.

Physical copies of TV shows are few and far between these days, so allowing the shows to potentially fall into the abyss through removal is a slap in the face to all involved in its production.

Where will the removed HBO shows end up?

The fate of the removed shows remains up in the air, but speculation is rising that they may end up on potential free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels.

What exactly is a FAST channel? Well, it's essentially cable television. The channels offer free content (with ads) via scheduled linear programming.

So yeah, it's pretty much just cable television streamed over the internet.

Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly eyeing FAST channels as a gateway to entice viewers to subscribe to the paid service.

Other possibilities may be available for the series, but specific details remain unknown. It's also unclear when exactly this round of removals will go into effect, but fans looking to catch the shows before they disappear should jump on it sooner than later.

As you might have expected, social media reactions to the moves have been harsh.

"HBO Max deleting so many shows and not putting out any physical media literally accomplishes nothing but allowing their parent company a way to weasel out of paying the proper residuals to the thousands of people that worked on them," Daniel Dockery tweeted.

With an ever-growing list of questionable decisions, the future of HBO Max is not looking too bright.
