First chapter closed! Marvel's What If...? season finale brings forth new defenders for the multiverse
Burbank, California – Marvel's What If...? closes out the first chapter of the series with a new team of heroes and a suspicious end-credit scene.
On Wednesday, the animated series concluded its perplexing first season.
Initially, the show took a while to play out — yet this week's finale seemingly brought everything full circle.
In this ninth episode, the mysterious alien figure The Watcher finally stepped in and formed a new team — The Guardians of the Multiverse.
The group — which contains the different variations of the Marvel characters that fans were introduced to throughout the series — bands together to stop Ultron.
Will this new ensemble of superheroes play a bigger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? And what does that ambiguous end-credit scene mean for season two?
What if there was a new team to protect the multiverse?
After painfully watching beloved characters repeatedly die throughout the season, viewers were finally treated to a win in the final episode.
Picking up from the previous episode, Strange Supreme, Captain Carter, Star-Lord/T'Challa, Party Thor, Black Panther/Killmonger, and Gamora are recruited from their respective timelines to fight the murderous bot.
Surprisingly, much like Nick Fury's vision for the Avengers, the Guardians of the Multiverse actually work well together – except for Killmonger, who can't seem to leave behind his blind desire for vengeance.
Nevertheless, the new team could prove useful for the MCU in the future.
The ending of the finale aptly leaves room for more stories to be told. And with a second season already confirmed, it's clear this won't be the last we see of the Guardians.
Yet, the highlight of the finale was the end-credit scene.
Peggy, aka Captain Carter, returns to her universe, where she and a version of the Black Widow discover the Hydra Stomper armor with someone inside.
While it's hinted at that the person could be the alternate version of Steve Rogers – as has been mentioned several times – anything is possible in the multiverse.
It should also be noted that the next season will premiere after the release of upcoming films Spider-man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Since the two Marvel flicks will heavily focus on the multiverse, it's possible the plots will also affect the second season of What If...?
Marvel's What If...? is streaming on Disney +, and now, you can binge the whole first season in its entirety.
