And Just Like That: Fan favorite spirals and gets frisky in the kitchen
New York, New York - Things begin to escalate on the latest episode of And Just Like That, as one major character engages in an illicit fling and the series plays with fire.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
After Cynthia Nixon's character Miranda hints she is unhappy with her life on the Sex and the City reboot series, the former lawyer does the unthinkable.
While taking care of Carrie, who is recovering from hip surgery, Miranda has sex in her BFF's kitchen with Che - Carrie's boss!
This, plus Miranda's excessive drinking problems, are at the forefront of the series' fourth and fifth episodes.
Elsewhere, Charlotte's world is also rocked when her daughter changes her name at school – unbeknownst to her parents – while Carrie deals with ageism and looking for a new home.
Yet, Miranda's cheating debacle is what truly rocks the HBO Max revival, as the once-well respected character – and show – could be headed down a slippery slope.
Miranda's downfall continues as she gets frisky in Carrie's kitchen
For those who have been following the reboot, it seems clear that Miranda's explicit sex scene with Che – portrayed Grey's Anatomy alum Sara Ramirez – was bound to happen.
Yet, the fact that it happened so soon, and that it took place in Carrie's kitchen while she was bedridden, is pretty mortifying and doesn't paint Miranda in the best light.
To be fair, the once fiery and unstoppable redhead's life has drastically changed since her arc on SATC. Now, she has a sexually active teenage son, a sexless marriage, and has also endured a pandemic.
It's obvious that the revival is trying to reshape Miranda's character, but is this the way to do it?
Che is a non-binary comedian who doesn't seem like the type that wants to settle down. While, Che and Miranda's hookup doesn't mean the two will become a couple, it obviously meant a lot more to the latter.
The end of the fifth episode shows Miranda gushing as she DMs Che that they should "hang out" - suggesting that Miranda could be exploring her sexuality. Yet, does the show have to make the once headstrong, independent woman a cheater in order to do so? And is Miranda just leading Che on?
Sure, Miranda's husband Steve made the mistake of stepping out on their marriage in the first SATC film. But the since-devoted hubby, reprised by David Eigenberg, and Miranda have gone through so much in their relationship that we're rooting for them.
Even if Miranda does end up breaking things off with him, the series probably could've handled her relationship transition in a way that doesn't villainize her for being unfaithful.
Speaking of sexuality – the show does get major kudos for its handling of Charlotte's daughter, who now goes by the name Rock.
The once high-strung socialite is very accepting of her daughter's transition, even though it is painful for her.
As for Carrie, the writer is trying to move forward with a new home, but does this mean she's also ready for a new man?
And Just Like That airs on Thursdays on HBO Max.
