Silk Sonic's debut album takes listeners on a groovy ride
Silk Sonic released their highly-anticipated album, An Evening With Silk Sonic, on Friday – and it's definitely worth the wait.
Pop, funk, and a whole lotta soul.
That's what fans are in store for when they listen to the R&B super duo's first album.
Very much in sync with their sultry golden-tinged album cover, Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak are bringing back soul at a time when the world probably needs it most.
Celebrated musician Bootsy Collins animatedly narrates the record, which helps complete Silk Sonic's apparent mission: to successfully bringing the '70s and '80s era of smooth sounds to a new generation.
The twosome met in 2017 and announced their formation as a joint duo on social media earlier this year.
A month later, they dropped their first single Leave The Door Open, giving fans a mere taste of what they could expect.
It's true that the album has just nine tracks and is only about 30 minutes long. But what it lacks in length, it greatly makes up for in quality.
Silk Sonic is the breath of fresh air needed in today's music
It's rare to come across an album that's 100% authentic and eclectic.
An Evening With Silk Sonic's versatility provides these two elements, and so much more.
The record also subtly pays homage to the greats that paved the way for the artists today.
Legends like Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, and Marvin Gay's influence can clearly be heard throughout the retro funk LP.
Take for instance the track Put On a Smile, which iconic songwriter Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds helped co-write. The smooth, slow-paced love song is eerily reminiscent of ballads from the early era of soul.
Silk Sonic's debut album brings a vibe that listeners from various ages can enjoy, which is another rarity these days.
But anyone who's been following these two artists' solo careers probably won't be shocked by the album's sultriness, and success.
Bruno has been the current reigning prince of funk since his rise to fame. The performer and producer's wide-ranging hits like Uptown Funk, Treasure, and 24K Magic are award-winning proof.
Anderson's brazen take on R&B has redefined the genre, as he hasn't been afraid to push the boundaries with his solo work in the past.
Therefore, it's no surprise that nothing short of musical bliss has come from these two wildly gifted individuals.
The artists have clearly found a formula that works, and each are able to bring their gifts without overstepping each other.
And that is the true magic of this new album.
An Evening With Silk Sonic is available on all streaming platforms.
