Faithless announce sudden death of lead vocalist Maxi Jazz
London, UK - Christmas Eve brought sad news for electronic music fans all over the world as English group Faithless announced the sudden death of their frontman and lead vocalist, Maxi Jazz, at the age of 65.
"We are heartbroken to say Maxi Jazz died peacefully in his sleep last night," the band's official Twitter account posted on Saturday.
The statement added: "He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave proper meaning and a message to our music. He was a lovely human being with time for everyone and wisdom that was both profound and accessible."
Born Maxwell Fraser, Maxi Jazz was a founding member of Faithless. With his deep voice and spoken-word delivery of powerful lyrics, he became instantly recognizable as the act achieved huge popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s.
The London-born artist was a lifelong Buddhist. His faith, strong anti-war stance – best typified by the hit song Mass Destruction – and willingness to tackle social issues set their music apart.
"It was an honour and, of course, a true pleasure to work with him. He was a brilliant lyricist, DJ, Buddhist, a magnificent stage presence, car lover, endless talker, beautiful person, moral compass and genius. Rest in peace dearest Max," Faithless wrote.
A cause of death has not yet been announced.
