Black Adam reminds fans why the DCEU needs an anti-hero
The DC Extended Universe's (DCEU) much anticipated movie Black Adam has smashed into theaters garnering mixed reactions from fans.
At last, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's debut into the superhero world as Teth-Adam/Black Adam is here and bless heavens for it.
The antihero and promised savior of the oppressed country Kahndaq is released from his 5,000-year imprisonment, yet his release isn't well-received by everyone.
While the latest superhero flick is downright fun from start to finish thanks to The Rock and his colorful costars, the movie's arrival has seen mixed reviews amongst fans and viewers.
But don't let the wavering reception fool you as Black Adam is an insanely thrilling ride and the redemption the DCEU desperately needs.
Black Adam: The return of the anti-hero
There's a reason why the DCEU is a vastly different universe in comparison to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Just like how things aren't always black and white in the real world, it's no different in the comic book world.
Now it's not to say that the MCU hasn't taken a dark turn, so to speak.
But fans can agree that the DCEU is darker and grittier. And when it comes to the villains, the franchise isn't afraid to make the evil guys truly evil, like Heath Ledger's the Joker in The Dark Knight.
Another thing the DCEU does that solidifies its uniqueness is it bold take on anti-heroes.
Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman and John Cena's Peacemaker are other examples of the complicated figures that play for the good guys and the bad ones.
Just like Black Adam poignantly reminds viewers throughout the film, sometimes the world doesn't need a "hero"; sometimes it needs the ones who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty – or bloody.
Aside from its emphasis on the need for a rogue savior, Black Adam has plenty of other gems to offer.
The cinematography is breathtaking, the musical score is wicked in the best way, and the introduction of the Justice Society of America (JSA) is a sight to be seen with Pierce Brosnan's take as Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate stealing the show.
Plus, the end-credit scene will literally leave everyone floored, whether they knew about the surprise cameo or not.
Fans sound off on the latest DCEU flick
But as mentioned earlier, the film has gained mixed feedback from fans and critics, particularly Twitter users.
One fan praised the movie, writing, "Just finished Black Adam, that movie was fun as hell. Ignore the critics."
But another tweeted its disappointment in the superhero flick: "Black Adam was an absolute mess, franchise maintenance disguised as a film. A complete bore," the user wrote.
