With inflation raising prices on just about everything under the sun, any way consumers can save a bit of money is more than welcome.

Microsoft has begun testing a new feature on Xbox consoles which promises to do just that, and said it will help gamers "better decide how you want your console to behave when you turn it off."

To start, the previously titled "energy saver" option has been renamed "shut-down." Yet, the new mode won't shut down the system completely, allowing it to download automatic updates.

Next, the "standby" setting has been renamed "sleep mode," which keeps the system on, allowing for updates and games to be downloaded and installed. Sleep mode will use more power than shut-down, but will speed up the system's boot-up time.

Finally, the Xbox will display exactly how much energy it will use when it is turned off, which can help users track their energy consumption in a far more efficient manner.

According to PureXbox, energy saver mode, soon to be called "shut down", uses 26 times less energy than standby – the new "sleep mode."

Currently, the Xbox upgrade is only available for Xbox Insider members, but it is expected to roll out for everyone soon.
