Trans gamer gets suspended for using the words "trans rights"
Vancouver, Canada - A game studio that posts its support of LGBTQ+ Pride changed two team names and suspended a player for using two words: "trans rights."
Twitch user @daalpacagirl had her MechWarrior Online account suspended by Piranha Games Inc. for 48 hours and her clan's competitive team names changed because the game studio's moderation team decided that using the word "trans" is discriminatory or political in nature.
That was the justification offered to @daalpacagirl after she regularly used the phrase "trans rights" in the in-game chat.
In a twitter thread and Reddit post, she shows her exchange with a PGI moderator, who doesn't clearly explain what the reported behavior was before banning her account for 48 hours.
Her clan competitive teams "KDCM V: Trans Rights" and "KDCM IV: Trans Fights" were renamed to KDCM V and KDCM VI by PGI moderators with the explanation that the original team names were promoting intolerance.
The email exchanges with the two teams and with @daalpacagirl make it clear that the moderation team interpreted the terms and conditions as strictly prohibiting using the word trans at all.
Ban and name changes lifted
Piranha Games has since backpedaled by undoing the account suspension and allowing the clan's use of the term "trans" in their team names going forward.
PGI president Russ Bullock responded to the outcry regarding the issue by tweeting that his company is 100% inclusive and that the word "trans" has been excluded by the end-user license agreement for a "very very long time."
PGI's Live Operations Manager, Matt Newman, released a statement on the situation, stating that "there is zero bigotry or ill will toward the trans community from Piranha Games, myself, or the Customer Support Team."
Newman also took the time in his statement to mention the trend of game characters painted with the Confederate flag, criticizing "symbols of hate and oppression in the game."
According to Newman, the decal creation tools which players use to customize their characters can't be moderated automatically ,but Newman invited users to submit reports with screenshots of any symbols of hate and oppression they come across in-game.
Although it got there in the end, Piranha Games needed public outcry to change moderation actions that were not clearly explained and came across as transphobic to members of the trans community.
