Sealed copy of Super Mario 64 sells at auction for record-breaking sum
Dallas, Texas – A sealed copy of Super Mario 64 broke records after being sold for $1.5 million just two days after the sale of the original Zelda made waves.
There has never been a better time to own, and sell, unused copies of original Nintendo games that are in mint condition.
On July 11, Dallas-based Heritage Auctions announced that a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 had sold for a whopping $1.56 million. This sale came two days after an original, unopened copy of Zelda broke records and sold for $870,000.
Super Mario 64 was the first game of its kind to hit the market in 1996. It was also the first game to use 3D technology in gameplay, allowing gamers to delve into the world of its main character, Mario, unlike ever before.
According to Heritage Auction's website, "The cultural significance of this title and its importance to the history of video games is paramount, and the condition of this copy is just so breathtaking that we're really at a loss."
Over time, Super Mario 64 would come to be the single best-selling video game ever created, laying the groundwork for the future of Nintendo and other gaming systems worldwide.
In July 2020, an original copy of Super Mario Bros sold for $114,000, kick-starting a year of record-breaking gaming sales.
But in April 2021, a hidden treasure in the form of a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. crushed records with a $660,000 sale of the game through Heritage Auctions.
Given the high ticket value of old school games in mint condition, it might be a good time to clean out your closets in search of potential gold.
