Jasper, Tennessee - American Idol star Willie Spence has passed away at the age of 23 after a tragic car accident.

On Tuesday, multiple outlets confirmed the death of the young singer, who placed second in the long-running competition last year.

According to TMZ, Spence died after his SUV went off the road and crashed into a car that was stopped on the shoulder while driving home to Atlanta from Tennessee.

A family friend revealed that the performer had a flat tire fixed on his car earlier in the day.

Per a preliminary accident report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol obtained by Fox affiliate WFXL, Spence's Jeep Cherokee crashed into the back of a truck around 4 PM in Jasper.

The singer was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The season 19 runner-up became a viral sensation after his ground-breaking audition for the singing competition.

Spence wowed judges Lionel Riche, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan with his rendition of Rihanna's Diamonds.

Following the sad news of his passing, season five runner-up Katherine McPhee paid tribute to the late singer by sharing his last Instagram post on her stories.

"I received very tragic news tonight," McPhee emotionally wrote in her IG stories.

"Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old. Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised. God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you."

Fellow season 19 contestant Alyssa Wray also honored Spence with a moving tribute.

"I'm so heartbroken. I'm sick to my stomach. I'm shocked. Still not sure my mind is fully processing this. I love you brother," Wray wrote under a post that featured a pic of the two together.

"The memories we have together are some of the best memories I have in this life and I will cherish them forever. I will hold you in my heart forever. You taught me so much. Your voice. That voice. Your kindness. Your love. By the grace of God, I sing for you forever now Willie."

The American Idol Twitter page wrote: "We are devastated about the passing of our beloved American Idol family member, Willie Spence. He was a true talent who lit up every room he entered and will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to his loved ones."
