Up in smoke? Benedict Cumberbatch suffers nicotine poisonings during filming
London, UK - Benedict Cumberbatch has been giving everything to embody his new film role.
According to the actor, he contracted three nicotine poisonings during his time filming the upcoming movie, The Power of the Dog.
The Sherlock and Marvel star pushed his limits for his new role as an abusive, chain-smoking rancher, where he stars opposite Kirsten Dunst.
"That was really hard," he told Esquire magazine. "Filterless rollies, just take after take after take."
"When you have to smoke a lot, it genuinely is horrible," he added.
Poisoning from excessive nicotine exposure can cause vomiting, headaches, dizziness, and in some cases, more severe symptoms.
In addition to smoking, the 45-year-old also mostly gave up bathing to fully embody his character!
"I wanted that layer of stink on me. I wanted people in the room to know what I smelt like," he said.
Cumberbatch also practiced playing the banjo excessively to become a "world-class" player.
"I’m very much not," he said. "I’m very far off."
The husband and father of three said there is a rhyme and reason as to why he puts nearly all of himself into his process.
"I really enjoy my work," the actor explained. "When I do work, I want to work hard. It has to be worth leaving my family and home for."
The Brit will also star as Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, due in May 2022.
The Power of the Dog is in theaters November 17, and arrives on Netflix December 1.
