Torey Lanez trial: Megan Thee Stallion takes the stand with tear-jerking testimony
Los Angeles, California - Rapper Megan Thee Stallion was painfully honest when she took the stand in Torey Lanez's shooting trial one day after opening arguments took place.
The Houston native took the stand to offer her version of events from that fateful night in July 2020, and she did not hold back.
Serving as a witness for the prosecution, Megan Thee Stallion reportedly told the court that Lanez showed little concern for her wellbeing after he allegedly shot her in the foot. Instead, the Anxiety rapper stated he was more interested in her protecting him.
Megan recalled that Lanez (30) pleaded with her, saying, "I can’t go to jail, I'm already on probation," before sweetening up his pleas with a hefty stack of cash if she opted not to "tell" on him.
The Grammy-winning music artist has had her credibility attacked in the media – and by others in the music industry – for standing by her version of events. However, these attacks didn't stop Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Pete, from speaking her truth under oath.
Holding back tears on the stand, Megan said, "I can’t believe I have to come here and do this."
She later stated she "can't even be happy" before adding, "I wish he would have shot and killed me if I knew I had to go through this torture."
During opening statements on Monday, prosecutors explained that Megan and Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, got into a heated argument while riding in an SUV after leaving Kylie Jenner's pool party, which led Megan to ask to be let out of the car. When she got out, Lanez allegedly shot her three times.
While on the stand, the 27-year-old said she saw Lanez's arm hanging out of the car's open window when he allegedly shot at her.
Megan Thee Stallion owns up to initial dishonesty and questions Lanez's actions
Megan Thee Stallion also testified that she heard screaming at the time of the shooting, and claims she had gunshot wounds in both of her feet.
Clad in just a bikini at the time, Megan said she initially lied to police and told them she stepped on glass when they arrived, as she was fearful of law enforcement in the wake of George Floyd's murder by then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, which occurred several weeks prior.
"At the time, we are at the height of police brutality," she said. "I felt like if I said this man has just shot me, they might shoot first and ask questions later.
"I didn’t feel safe in the car. I knew I just had got shot but I don’t feel safe with police either," Megan continued. "I didn’t want to see anybody die." At this point, prosecutors showed footage of her handcuffed to a gurney in an ambulance shortly after she was allegedly shot.
Megan also claimed that Lanez called her numerous times, once from an unknown number, to apologize for the events that transpired the night of the alleged shooting after claiming to have watched video footage from that night.
"Why are you being weird? You know you shot me and now you’re watching me?" Megan reportedly asked while on the stand on Tuesday.
Lanez faces numerous charges including assault with a semiautomatic firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. Last week, prosecutors tacked on a third felony charge for shooting a firearm with gross negligence. He has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
If convicted, Lanez face up to 22 years in prison.
The trial is supposed to last until early next week.
