Tom Felton reveals behind-the-scenes struggles in new memoir: "The problem was deeper"
London, UK - Tom Felton has opened up about his painful experience with addiction as a child star.
The Draco Malfoy actor has revealed some dark days behind him.
In his new memoir Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard, the Harry Potter star dished on his difficult relationship with alcohol, which led to several rehab stints.
"I went from being not particularly interested in drinking to regularly having a few pints a day before the sun had even gone down, and a shot of whiskey to go with each of them," Felton penned in an excerpt shared by CNN.
"The alcohol, though, wasn't the problem. It was the symptom. The problem was deeper."
Felton said that he did go to rehab after his then-girlfriend and management team staged an intervention, but he made a break for it after a few days.
Eventually, the now 35-year-old decided to seek help, calling it "one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make."
"But the very fact that I was able to admit to myself that I needed some help – and I was going to do something about it – was an important moment," he said.
"I am no longer shy of putting my hands up and saying: I'm not okay."
Felton credited his Harry Potter costar and close friend Emma Watson for giving him the courage to address his past addiction in his new memoir.
