"Today my heart breaks": Jessica Simpson publishes painful excerpts from her diary
Los Angeles, California - Singer Jessica Simpson got candid about the crushing standards the industry has put on her and how much she suffered from body-shaming earlier in her career.
"Today my heart breaks because people says I'm fat," Simpson wrote in her journal in 2009.
Her devastating diary excerpt is part of a new edition of Simpson’s memoir, Open Book, ironically first reported by People.
The journal entry came as the musician was met with body-shaming headlines after a concert performance in Texas.
The press discussed in great detail how she looked in "mom jeans" and "how she let herself go."
"Why does the cruel opinion of this world get to me?" she went on in her diary. "Last week I read back to my journals from 1999 and I beat myself up about how fat I [was] before I even gave the world a chance to."
Speaking to People, she recalled spending "years" beating hard on herself and feeling like a "failure" for not reaching an "unrealistic body standard."
Simpson shares three kids with her husband Eric Johnson
"I was treated as an object to be tossed around like a rag doll"
Twelve years later, Simpson shares three kids, Birdie Mae (2), Maxwell Drew (8), and Ace Knute (7), with her husband Eric Johnson. Much has changed for the star.
"I am still a work in progress when it comes to self-criticism but now I have the tools to quiet those voices in my head when they speak up," the 40-year-old said of herself.
She also takes comfort in all the positive responses she has gotten for her book, specifically that part of her story.
"I hate that I was treated as an object to be tossed around like a rag doll," Simpson wrote.
"But I smile to see me talking to myself back and forth across all these years."
