The Weekend is sonically leveling up the Avatar sequel

Los Angeles, California - The new Avatar movie hits theaters on December 16, and it comes with a surprising twist: the soundtrack features new music by The Weeknd.

The Canadian singer, born Abel Tesfaye, is collaborating on the soundtrack for Avatar: The Way of Water. The 32-year-old shared a sneak peek on social media by posting a short musical sequence in which a choir can be heard singing. The snippet also featured the Avatar logo.

Additionally, Avatar producer Jon Landau posted a photo with The Weeknd on Twitter. "As the Na'vi say, 'Zola'u nìprrte' soaiane Avatar'... Welcome to the Avatar family," he wrote. It was not initially revealed how extensive The Weeknd's involvement in the film is.

Director James Cameron (68) created the most financially successful film in history with Avatar - Departure to Pandora, which hit theaters in 2009 and grossed $2.8 billion worldwide.

In 2017, Cameron began work on four more Avatar films simultaneously, with expected release dates set for 2024, 2026, and 2028.

Avatar: The Way of Water will hit theaters on December 16.
