Tennis: Serena Williams goes back to the drawing board after getting bounced out in straight sets
Parma, Italy - Serena Williams suffered yet another loss, this time to no. 69 seed Kateřina Siniaková, as she continues to struggle to make it back to top form.
Tuesday was tough going again for Serena Williams, as she bowed out of her latest event much sooner than she had intended. The scene of the crime took place at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma, Italy, during the second round.
Falling in straight sets – 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 – Williams never really got going, and her game collapsed after she lost the first set tiebreak.
The disappointing defeat came just a day after she earned her first victory since the Australian Open, back in February.
Serena Williams is currently sitting at eighth in the WTA rankings, but things haven't been looking good for her this year. She did get as far as the semifinals of the Aussie Open, where Japan's Naomi Osaka defeated her, but she was forced to withdraw from her first tournament of 2021, The Yarra Valley Classic, due to a shoulder injury. Just last week, the 39-year-old suffered a first-round loss at the Italian Open.
Williams now has some extra time to prepare for her next attempt to get back to form. The French Open, which she last won in 2015, gets underway on May 30.
