R&B legend Jesse Powell has passed away
Los Angeles, California - R&B singer Jesse Powell, known best for his 1999 hit You, has passed away.
Powell's sister Tamara broke the news via Instagram on Tuesday, sharing a message from the family to his fans.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, and uncle," the statement read.
It went on to explain that Powell (51) died peacefully at his home, although no cause of death was shared. The family requested privacy as they mourn their loss and "celebrate his everlasting legacy."
"Jessie loved music, and he especially loved his fans who supported him throughout his career. We want you all to know that you meant the world to him," the family said in the statement.
In a follow-up post, Tamara shared a video of Jesse performing his hit song You with the caption "That voice!"
"Aside from being one of the best R&B male vocalists out there, you were the best big brother ever," she added. "I loved you so much. I'm thankful that we were so close; a whole mess all the time."
Jesse built a modest career as a singer, which peaked with the release of his single You in 1999 which made it to number two on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album 'Bout It, which featured the single, was certified gold.
"We absolutely adored you, 'Jet,'" Tamara said of her brother, "and our family will not be the same without you."
