Olivia Rodrigo is anything but Sour after landing Time's Entertainer of the Year
New York, New York – Olivia Rodrigo is being honored in a huge way following her monumental breakout year.
If her seven Grammy nominations didn't speak loud enough for any remaining naysayers, perhaps her latest accomplishment will.
On Thursday, Time Magazine named Rodrigo as its Entertainer of the Year. The announcement comes days before the publication is set to reveal its prestigious Person of the Year award on December 13, and one day after naming Simone Biles its Athlete of the Year.
Given how explosive 2021 has been for Rodrigo, it's fitting that the 18-year-old would land Entertainer of the Year.
This year, Rodrigo released her breakthrough hit, Driver's License, which led to the creation and release of her debut album, Sour.
As 2021 rolled on, Rodrigo skyrocketed to a level of fame that often takes years to attain, but did it with poise, grace, and a keen sense of herself.
On November 23, that same album racked up seven Grammy nominations, and the first ever for the musician.
In her Entertainer of the Year interview with Time, Rodrigo so eloquently said, "Young women are constantly compared to each other. I’m the 'new this' or 'this woman meets that woman,' and that can be reductive."
She continued, "I’m just Olivia. I’m doing my own thing. It’s meaningful when people recognize that."
In January, Rodrigo and Geffen Records announced their partnership that led to Sour's release, and it's one that will allow Rodrigo to own her masters – something that isn't commonly seen in the music industry.
Typically, it's the labels who have full ownership over the copyright to its artists' recordings, rather than the artist themselves. But having a path to ownership over the music she creates is something Rodrigo sees as "only fair."
This exact predicament is what led Taylor Swift to rerecord her albums once her contract allowed, giving her the right to own the masters she poured her heart and soul into.
But as she told Time Magazine, the Los Angeles, California native isn't aspiring to be like anyone else, she just wants to be herself.
Whatever that means or looks like on any given day is up to Rodrigo, and Rodrigo alone.
