Matt Damon gets slammed for using homophobic slur just "months ago"
New York, New York - Matt Damon has landed in hot water for explaining why he only just stopped using a derogatory term.
Some things are better left unsaid.
The Bourne Identity actor is unfortunately learning this the hard way.
On Sunday, Matt revealed during an interview with The Sunday Times that he had only just stopped using a homophobic term at the behest of his daughter.
The 50-year-old explained that he used the disparaging slur in front of one of his four daughters recently – which prompted her to leave the room.
"I made a joke, months ago, and got a treatise from my daughter," Matt recalled.
He added, "She left the table. I said, 'Come on, that’s a joke! I say it in the movie Stuck on You!' She went to her room and wrote a very long, beautiful treatise on how that word is dangerous. I said, 'I retire the f-slur!' I understood."
Though the star didn't name-drop which of his daughters put him in his place, he's also received widespread backlash from social media.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community publicly condemned Matt and his ignorance to how offensive the term is. Even fellow entertainers questioned the actor's reasoning for opening his mouth.
"I want to know what word Matt Damon has replaced f****t with," actor Billy Eichner wrote.
"Matt Damon wiping a tear as he changes Gus Van Sant’s nickname in his contacts list," a Twitter user shared.
Another posted: "Remember when the joke was that Ben Affleck was the dumb one and Matt Damon was the smart one? Because one is dating J-Lo and the other is spending the year of our lord Dolly Parton 2021 bragging about how he just stopped saying 'f*g.'"
Clearly, fans aren't going to let this little blunder go anytime soon.
Matt had even more to say, this time on the topic of his BFF's renewed romance!
Matt Damon's take on Bennifer 2.0
Matt's comments recently weren't all a misstep.
Last week, while on the show Desus and Mero, Matt shared his thoughts on Ben Affleck's renewed relationship with Jennifer Lopez.
After being asked what it's like to see his close friend's love life displayed all over the news, he admitted that it's weird, but he's glad the media isn't as bad it used to be.
"I have to say, the press was particularly terrible to them, like, 18 years ago. What's nice is that at least they're being nice this time around," Matt offered.
He further revealed that even though Bennifer has been sailing around the Mediterranean, Ben is still on top of his "priorities."
"They're on vacation right now, but he still responded when I hit him up about the Red Sox yesterday. You still have priorities!" he joked.
We'll forgive you for your slip up this time, Matt – but only because we want the inside scoop on Bennifer!
