Leslie Jordan, TV and social media star, dies in car crash
Hollywood, California – Emmy Award-winning funnyman Leslie Jordan died in a car accident in Hollywood on Monday morning. He was 67 years old.
Jordan was reportedly driving his BMW when he crashed into a building at Cahuenga Blvd. and Romaine St. He is thought to have suffered a medical emergency. His cause of death is still under investigation.
Jordan was best known professionally for his TV roles in American Horror Story, Hearts Afire, and Will & Grace – which earned him an Emmy Award in 2006 as guest actor in a comedy series.
Yet his popularity soared when he became an unlikely social media star during the Covid pandemic by making amusing Instagram videos for his "fellow Hunker Downers." He entertained millions of followers with his jokes about being a senior citizen and part of the gay community, his strong Southern accent, his singing and dancing, and his silly celebrity commentary.
Jordan rang in 2022 on CNN's New Year's Eve live countdown alongside hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen and hosted this year's Oscar nominations ceremony in February. He was continuing his many film and TV cameos at the time of his death.
A message posted to the comedian's account on Monday afternoon after his passing said more would be on the way: "In the coming days we will be giving a glimpse of a project Leslie was really proud of and was looking forward to sharing with the world."
Leslie Jordan is remembered across social media by stars and fans
"The world is definitely a much darker place today without the love and light of Leslie Jordan," his agent David Shaul said in a statement.
"Not only was he a mega talent and joy to work with, but he provided an emotional sanctuary to the nation at one of its most difficult times. What he lacked in height he made up for in generosity and greatness as a son, brother, artist, comedian, partner and human being.
"Knowing that he has left the world at the height of both his professional and personal life is the only solace one can have today."
Tributes to the actor have poured out on social media, including from Will & Grace co-stars Sean Hayes and Eric McCormack, fellow comedians Billy Eichner and Loni Love, and singers Demi Lovato and Jennifer Hudson.
RuPaul's Drag Race also weighed in: "Thank you for the countless laughs and for sharing your spirit with us all."
Many more on social media have remembered Jordan for being an LGBTQ+ icon, and having a huge heart.
