Katy Perry's first show for her Las Vegas residency was larger than life
Las Vegas, Nevada – Katy Perry has always been known for her eccentricity, and the opening night of her Las Vegas residency lived up to the music artist's reputation.
On Thursday, Katy Perry kicked off her first-ever Las Vegas residency, Play, at Resorts World Theater, proving exactly why she's considered one of the top performers around.
Hours before her first show, Perry shared a video on Instagram giving a sneak preview of what was in store, as she climbs under a life-size field of mushrooms, elusively asking fans, "Are you ready to play?"
Fan videos posted to Twitter from opening night showcased the larger-than-life theme in her pre-show Insta video carried over to the actual stage design for the residency itself.
From twerking atop a giant toilet bowl, to dancing plungers and mushrooms, Perry's vision was chaotic but strangely on-brand for the Hot N Cold singer.
It wasn't just her props or stage design that stood out, because it wouldn't be a Katy Perry if she didn't have some eclectic costumes to match the outlandish nature of the set.
Clad in undoubtedly custom-made outfits such as an intricate dress that dispensed beer – which she at one point reportedly poured into a mug and proceeded to chug on stage – Perry showed that she's only growing more fearless with her fashion choices as her career grows.
The 95-minute show saw Perry perform 19 hits from her decade-long catalog of top-40 bangers, giving some of them quite the remix.
The 37-year-old even tried a Jazz rendition of Waking Up in Vegas on for size, aptly calling it the "Vegas style" of her 2009 hit.
To fans' surprise and utter enjoyment, Rolling Stone reported that Perry made the live performance debut of her newly released single, When I'm Gone.
Per usual, Perry gave fans a safe place to sing, dance, and cut loose without fear of judgement or ridicule, and that's all anyone can really ask of a Las Vegas residency.
Perry's outlandish residency, Play, is slated to run through March 19, 2022 at Resorts World Theater.
