Justin Bieber reveals how bad things got at the height of his drug use
Los Angeles, California - Justin Bieber has opened up about a traumatic time at the height of his success.
Speaking to GQ magazine for a profile, the 27-year-old singer got candid about his past drug problems and how his wife Hailey and Christianity has helped him get back on track.
After the Canadian-born star skyrocketed to worldwide fame with his first single One Time at the tender age of 15, Bieber developed a reputation for drug scandals and brushes with law enforcement.
Now, Bieber has revealed that there were times when security guards would sneak into his bedroom in the middle of the night and check his pulse to make sure he was still alive.
"It was like I had all this success and it was still like: I'm still sad, and I'm still in pain. And I still have these unresolved issues. And I thought all the success was going to make everything good. And so for me, the drugs were a numbing agent to just continue to get through," he said.
"I just lost control of my vision for my career."
Things took a turn for the better when Justin married Hailey
"There's all these opinions. And in this industry, you've got people that unfortunately prey on people's insecurities and use that to their benefit," he continued.
"And then you wake up one day and your relationships are f***** up and you're unhappy and you have all this success in the world, but you're just like: Well, what is this worth if I'm still feeling empty inside?"
Bieber revealed things changed for the better after he tied the knot with his now-wife Hailey Baldwin in 2018.
The singer now credits his marriage as a major force for his well-being despite experiencing a fairly difficult start.
"The first year of marriage was really tough (...) because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff." But now, he added, "we're just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we're building these memories. And it's beautiful that we have that to look forward to."
Bieber also said his faith helped him deal with past trauma.
"I have a wife who I adore, who I feel comforted by. I feel safe. I feel like my relationship with God is wonderful. And I have this outpouring of love that I want to be able to share with people, you know?" Bieber told GQ.
