Joseph was born on March 12, 1991, in Kingston, Jamaica, and eventually moved to the US at the age of 11. He is the eldest son of Grammy Award-winning musician Stephen Marley, and the grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley.

He grew up surrounded by artists and musicians, including his uncles Damien and Ziggy Marley, and was also paving his own way in reggae music.

In 2010, he made his musical debut under his nickname "Jo Mersa" with the song My Girl, a collaboration with his cousin Daniel Bambaata Marley. In 2012, he followed it up with the breakout track Bad So.

Joseph never got to complete a full album of his own, but did manage to release an EP called Comfortable in 2014, and his last piece of work, an EP titled Eternal in 2021, which was met with critical acclaim.

His death received an outpouring of responses from Jamaican politicians, including the prime minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness.

"My heartfelt sympathies to Joseph’s friends and associates and to the Reggae music fraternity and fans everywhere," Holness tweeted. "His untimely passing at the young age of 31 y.o. is a huge loss to the music as we look to the next generation."

Joseph Marley leaves behind a wife, a daughter, and an extended family of incredibly talented artists.
