Will Johnny Depp return to Fantastic Beasts?
Los Angeles, California - While speaking at the Sarajevo Film Festival, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen said that Johnny Depp "might" return to the Fantastic Beasts franchise now that he's won his court case.
Mikkelsen took over the role of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the third installment of the Harry Potter prequel film series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, after Depp stepped back from the franchise.
The 59-year-old withdrew from the role due to the very public legal disputes with his ex-wife Amber Herd and his allegedly abusive behavior.
"Obviously, well, now the course has changed — he won the suit, the court [case] —so let’s see if he comes back. He might," Mikkelsen said at an event at the film festival on Monday, per Deadline. Mikkelsen is at the fest to accept the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for his outstanding contribution to the art of film.
Mikkelsen went on to say he's a fan of Depp's: "I think he’s an amazing actor. I think he did a fantastic job." He added that taking over Depp's role had been "intimidating."
In June, Depp won his defamation case against Heard, yet the two are gearing up to square off again in court through appeals.
Since his legal victory, the Pirates of the Caribbean star has been making big moves. Depp is once again the face of Dior Sauvage, has been selling his artwork, dropped an album, and will tour with his rock band next year.
He will also return to movies, as he's slated to play the French King Louis XV in the upcoming romantic pic Jeanne du Barry, and has been tapped to direct his first film in 25 years.
As of yet, it's unclear if Depp will be returning to Fantastic Beasts.
