Johnny Depp to make movie comeback in French film La Favorite
Los Angeles, California - Johnny Depp is set to make his big comeback to acting in an upcoming French film.
The film will be his first since winning his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard on July 1, and his first role since the 2020 film Minamata. It will also mark his first appearance in a French-speaking film.
Depp will star as King Louie XV alongside Maiwenn Le Besco, also the film's director, who plays his mistress Madame du Barry.
A release date has yet to be announced for the project, but it is expected sometime in 2023.
According to Variety, Netflix has struck up a licensing deal to stream the film on their service in France after completion of a 15-month theatrical window.
In February, Netflix worked out an agreement with several French film cinema guilds where they committed to investing at least 4% of their revenue made in France to finance French and European films over the next three years.
La Favorite is set to begin filming this summer for three months at various locations, including the Versailles Palace.
