John Mulaney announces his divorce after completing rehab
New York, New York – After six years of marriage, John Mulaney and wife Annamarie Tendler are heading to splitsville.
A 60-day stint in rehab might've given the comedian (38) a sober view on more things than just his substance abuse.
On Monday, a representative for the comedian confirmed to People that Mulaney and his wife Annamarie are getting a divorce.
In a statement shared by her representative, Tendler said, "I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage."
The statement continued, "I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery."
News of the couple's split comes five months after Mulaney checked himself into rehab for alcohol and cocaine abuse. He spent 60 days at the facility, then received treatment as an outpatient.
Mulaney hasn't tip-toed around his struggle with addiction, having adding stories about his journey into stand-up specials, and even speaking publicly about his love for alcohol and cocaine in numerous interviews.
In 2019, Mulaney told Esquire he had his first drink at 13 after he thought he lost his ability to crack a joke.
"I was really outgoing, and then at twelve, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again," Mulaney said.
He wasn't a fan of marijuana, but once he tried cocaine, he fell in love almost instantly.
After an especially terrible bender in 2005, the former Saturday Night Live writer said he wasn't "rooting" for himself anymore, and made the decision to get sober.
Mulaney was nearly 15 years sober prior to checking into rehab in December 2020.
