The Scottish-born actor's agent, Belinda Wright, announced that he died at a hospital in Scotland on Friday. No cause of death was given.

A star of both screen and stage, Coltrane's previous work on the television series Cracker earned him three BAFTAs in consecutive years.

However, it's his role in the Harry Potter franchise that will be cherished the most by fans.

Wright described it as "a role which brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world, prompting a stream of fan letters every week for over 20 years."

Coltrane reflected on the lasting impact his work in the film series has had on so many in HBO Max's Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special, which was released at the beginning of this year.

"The legacy of the movies is that my children's generation will show them to their children, so you could be watching them in fifty years' time, easy," he said. "I'll not be here, sadly, but Hagrid will."
