On Friday, the 75-year-old artist, who has over a million followers on Twitter, shared one final tweet explaining his reasons for abandoning the platform.

"All my life I've tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world," he wrote.

"I've decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy, which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked."

Musk's takeover has led to a series of questionable and erratic changes to the platform's policies, including its verification process.

The policy changes have led to a rise in fake accounts as well as a concerning disregard for misinformation being spread on the platform about Covid-19.

John joins a long list of stars who have ditched Twitter since Musk's takeover as CEO, including Gigi Hadid, Whoopi Goldberg, and Amber Heard.

Musk responded to the singer's farewell tweet shortly after it was posted. "I love your music. I hope you come back," he wrote. "Is there any misinformation in particular that you're concerned about?"

John is not likely to be the last famous face to bid adieu to the app as Musk continues on his streak of unsettling decisions.
