Towards the end of his set at the Chase Center on Sunday night, Chappelle tried to surprise the crowd of thousands by bring a special guest to the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world!" the comedian announced.

But it's safe to say the crowd didn't react as they had expected. Musk was booed for several minutes straight as he walked onto the stage.

"What should I say?" Musk, who donned an "I love Twitter" shirt, awkwardly asks the comedian in clips posted to social media.

Chappelle attempts to make light of the situation with a few jokes.

"It sounds like some of those people you fired are in the audience," he said, referring to Musk's recent acquisition of Twitter and his subsequent firing of more than half of its staff.

His jokes start to get a bit more personal as the boos continue, with Musk remaining silent, with his hands in his pocket.

"All of those people who are booing, I'm just pointing out the obvious, they have terrible seats. It's all coming from way up there," Chappelle says, poking harder at the crowd.

"Listen, this n**** is not even trying to die on earth. His whole business model is "f*** Earth, I'm leaving anyway!" he adds.

The awkward moment ends with Chappelle getting Musk to say "I'm rich b***h!" into the microphone.

Musk has received heavy criticism for his handling of Twitter, which has its headquarters in San Francisco.

His firing of most of the staff also included workers tasked with policing the platform for hate speech. He has also shared conspiracy theories, urged users to vote Republican, and reinstated many far-right accounts that were banned before he took over.

He also recently criticized San Francisco mayor London Breed after an investigation was launched into Twitter building beds for overworked employees. Musk argued that the city is attacking his company instead of "making sure kids are safe from fentanyl."

Ironically, the Twitter user who posted the original video of the incident had their account suspended, although Elon Musk has been pushing his reformed platform as the bastion of free speech.
