Pop star royalty voices support for Britney Spears after groundbreaking hearing
Los Angeles, California – Pop music icons have banded together to show overwhelming support for the #FreeBritney movement.
On Wednesday, Princess of Pop Britney Spears petitioned for her release from the conservatorship that has kept her activities and financial assets under the control of her father Jamie Spears for the last 13 years.
During her virtual court appearance, she detailed harrowing physical and emotional restrictions placed on her.
By Thursday, the internet had exploded with reactions to the star's haunting testimony.
Expressions of solidarity most notably came from some of pop music's biggest names, who have also experienced life under the celebrity microscope.
"We love you Britney!!!" wrote Mariah Carey. "Stay strong."
Cher tweeted that she would call government officials regarding Britney's case: "I will try to call. Might not get through...But I will try."
Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean made a TikTok video set to Britney's song Piece of Me.
"This s--t has gone on long enough! Let my girl live her life and be free to be who she is! Hearing yesterday made me sick!" he captioned the clip.
Actor and pop star Mandy Moore, who also rose to fame during the pop princess era of the late 90s, took to her Instagram Story to defend Britney, who was one time seen as her musical rival.
She called the "abuse" Britney had endured "staggering, heartbreaking, and shameful."
Star-studded support has kept on coming
The support from stars kept on coming into Thursday, with comments from singers Brandy, Liz Phair, and Tinashe joining the growing chorus.
"Oldest trick in the book of the patriarchy: Declare a woman mad and gain control of her assets/property," said Phair.
Pop star Halsey posted, "I hope with my whole heart she is awarded freedom from this abusive system," and blasted "anyone who thinks they have the authority as an institution or individual to control a person's reproductive health."
In her testimony on Wednesday, Britney alleged that her family insisted she continue to use an IUD to prevent pregnancy, forced her to perform in Las Vegas with a high fever, and placed her on a lithium medication that made her feel "drunk."
"I'm not happy. I'm so angry it's insane, and I'm depressed. I cry every day," Britney said.
The hearing was held at Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
"I didn't know I could petition the conservatorship to end," professed Spears to the judge. "I honestly didn't know that. I've done more than enough. I don't owe these people anything. I've roofed and clothed and fed people on the road. It's demoralizing what I've been through."
Fans and celebs alike are clearly with her in the fight.
