Brendan Fraser will be the main villain in Batgirl – so what does this mean for the DCEU?
Brendan Fraser will play his first villain role in the upcoming DC film, Batgirl.
On Monday, Deadline confirmed that The Mummy star will portray the bad guy in the impending DC flick.
The 52-year-old will play Garfield Lynns, aka Firefly, the arch-nemesis of Batgirl.
Fraser will star opposite Leslie Grace, the breakout In The Heights star who will play Barbara Gordon.
The actor has normally stuck to heroic roles throughout his career. After a significant absence from the limelight, Fraser is currently nabbing gigs left, right, and center.
He's already involved in the DC Extended Universe as the friendly cyborg Cliff Steele aka Robotman in the HBO Max spin-off show Doom Patrol. Which begs the question: how will his Batgirl role affect the DCEU?
Since Robotman has only made a crossover appearance with the rest of his comrades in the first season of the DC series Titans, not that much. What's more, much like his time on Doom Patrol, Cliff is mostly just seen in his robot form, minus a couple of very brief flashbacks, so his dual role in the franchise shouldn't cause too much confusion for viewers.
But it all depends on how his role as Firefly will be handled. It might be a substantial role, given DCEU has been daringly giving anti-heroes their own in-depth storylines.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one example, as Shazam's foe and the titular character of Black Adam. John Cena's baddie character from The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, is also getting his own HBO Max series.
Will the DCEU do the same for Brendan's evil-counterpart?
DC's Batgirl will premiere on HBO Max in 2022.
