Backstreet Boy gets down in drag for a surprise new music video!
Los Angles - AJ McLean might have been the Backstreet Boys' designated bad boy, but the bold new look debuted in his latest music is a radical departure from that past.
The 43-year-old singer has always been the most rebellious Backstreet Boy.
He never fit in a box – visually or in general – which may have been the secret to his success.
However, his wild side also had its downsides.
Following the group's incredible success in the late '90s and early 2000s, McLean became notorious for overindulging in drugs and alcohol.
But 28 years after the band's historic founding, and two rehabs later, the Backstreet Boy's "back alright" and ready to rock his body once again! And he's showing a very different part of him.
In the music video for his brand-new solo Love Song Love, he dresses in drag while dancing around a Hollywood dollhouse dripped in pink, crashing through the boundaries of gender and style.
He dances alongside transgender models Nahla Wyld and Carmen Carrera, who turn it up surrounded by colorful flowers and feathers.
"I'm an ally and this song, to me, screams 'love no matter what.'"
Premiering on Variety, the father-of-two aims to shed light on LGBTQ+ fight for equality.
His message comes just as a wave of anti-trans bills are being introduced across the US.
"Now, more than ever, my trans and non-binary fans’ rights and very existence are being attacked in politics and in the streets," McLean told Variety.
"What’s happening is unacceptable. I’m an ally and this song, to me, screams ‘love no matter what.’ It’s about loving and respecting one another," he added.
With Joe Biden as new president, he hopes things will change for the better.
"Things are starting to change and with the new administration, there’s more open-mindedness, which is how it should’ve always been because it really doesn’t matter if you were born a boy, but have always been a girl. But there’s a long way to go," he said.
AJ McLean knows well what it's like to come under attack
McLean himself is no stranger to attacks. The famous singer has come under fire for his nails, which he has been painting for two decades, and for appearing in a dress alongside his wife Rochelle (39), among other things.
Most recently, the star took the spotlight at Dancing With The Stars, when he appeared on stage fully dressed in drag.
"Luckily, this generation’s using their platforms to speak out about negativity, judgment, racism and hostile acts towards minorities and the trans community. It gives me hope for my kids’ generation," McLean said.
AJ's daughters Ava Jaymes and Lyric Dean celebrate their father's hit song
Ahead of his radio premiere, McLean posted a brief clip showing himself alongside his two daughters, celebrating the song with him in the car.
Meanwhile, his fans have been showering the pop star with praise and love, and many said they felt seen and represented in his new music video.
"As a member of the LGBT community, this song touches my heart," a fan wrote on YouTube.
"As a trans fan i am so unbelievably proud of aj. i have never felt more loved and supported by someone i look up to so intensely," another chimed in.
