Ay! Machine Gun Kelly and Lil Wayne created a crossover bop
Los Angeles, California – There's nothing like new music by Machine Gun Kelly on a Friday, especially when it features the one and only Lil Wayne.
When MGK announced he was dropping a new track with Lil Wayne, one question came to mind: is he going back to his rapping roots?
Though the 31-year-old started his music career in the rap scene, he shifted towards punk rock glory on his last album, Tickets To My Downfall.
Once he dropped his latest track, titled ay!, it was clear that he wasn't leaving one genre for the other.
Rather, he was combining two worlds he loved into a two-and-a-half minute song with the help of frequent collaborator Travis Barker and Lil Wayne.
To be quite honest, this might be the sound Machine Gun Kelly has been looking for all along, and the music video is what quick-editing and TikTok-like transition dreams are made of.
Within the first few seconds of the short and sweet video, Machine Gun Kelly calls his "boys" and asks them to come by so they can shoot the video for the song "because it comes out in the morning."
Given that his new kitten, which he first posted about via Instagram on Tuesday, makes a cameo, it's likely that he did shoot, edit, and finalize the video less than 24 hours before the song was posed to drop.
Keeping it real
Though it might not be dowsed in visual effects and intense editing the musician has become increasingly known for, it doesn't make the music video any less entertaining, especially for die-hard MGK fans.
"I cut my hair off like I’m Britney," he sings in the first verse while donning his hot pink locks and a slew of different tops, including a matching feather jacket that screams MGK.
The lyrics tackle some real life predicaments, such as depression, addiction, and anxiety. Although Lil Wayne doesn't make a physical appearance in the video, it didn't stop MGK from making a cardboard cutout of the rapper.
If Machine Gun Kelly wasn't entertaining enough during his verse, he shined while lip-syncing that of Weezy's, as did his bandmates who play the role of unlikely backup dancers.
Ay! is the second single off MGK's forthcoming album, Mainstream Sellout.
On February 9, he dropped the music video for the album's debut single, Emo Girl featuring WILLOW.
Mainstream Sellout is slated to drop on March 25.
