Alanis Morrisette explains absence at Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame
Los Angeles, California - Alanis Morrisette took to social media to clarify her reasons for missing out on Carly Simon's induction ceremony at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.
The 48-year-old was originally slated to perform Simon's hit You're So Vain alongside Olivia Rodrigo.
Per Page Six, Morrisette attended rehearsals on Friday but later pulled out of the event before it was filmed on Saturday. Rodrigo ultimately performed the cover solo.
The You Oughta Know singer posted a lengthy statement to her Instagram story on Monday to dispel swirling rumors about her absence.
She began by praising the artists who were honored or performed at the ceremony before revealing that her absence was driven by her frustration with the rampant sexism in the music industry.
Alanis Morrisette calls out "anti-woman sentiment" in the music industry
The statement highlighted the singer's experience with sexism and inequality throughout her decades-long career in the industry.
"I have spent decades in an industry that is rife with an overarching anti-woman sentiment and have tolerated a lot of condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation and psychological violence (and more) throughout my career," Morrisette wrote.
She continued to say that she tolerated the discrimination for years in order to be able to "connect with people" in her career.
"Thankfully, I'm at a point in my life where there is no need for me to spend time in an environment that reduces women," the star said.
It's unclear what happened during the production process for the induction ceremony that caused Morrisette to drop out, but her statement clarifies that she will continue to participate in settings that combat sexism and promote inclusion.
"There is nothing better than a team of diverse people coming together with one mission. I'll continue to show up in those environments with bells on," the musician concluded.
