After Anya Taylor-Joy was bullied, she didn't think herself beautiful
London, United Kingdom - Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy has delighted millions with her starring role in the Netflix miniseries, but the 24-year-old has recently surprised fans with an unexpected confession.
With her big doe eyes, slender figure, and sensational acting talent, the British-Argentinean actor is a model Hollywood star. Now, having stunned with her performance in Queen's Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy is on everyone's minds.
Yet, in an interview with The Sun, Taylor-Joy revealed the extent of bodily dissatisfaction: "I have never, and I don’t think I will ever, think of myself as beautiful. I don’t think I’m beautiful enough to be in films."
She explained that she thinks that her looks are "Weird." Referencing her portrayal of Jane Austen's Emma, she shared that she believes 'I am the first ugly Emma and I can't do this."
Anya Taylor-Joy bullied for being different at school
Anya has been dreaming of becoming a successful actor since she was six, but her road to fame was incredibly long. When she moved from Buenos Aires to London at only eight years of age, she recalled "I didn’t really feel like I fitted in anywhere."
Anya didn't speak any English at all when she moved to the United Kingdom. She said that her classmates bullied her by trapping her in school lockers. As a result, she often locked herself in the bathroom and cried.
Luckily, her school nightmare ended when she was discovered by a model scout at 16. While this admittedly kick-started her career, she never felt completely at ease in her skin.
Anya Taylor-Joy's struggles and body insecurity
"The beauty of being in your own skin is that you don’t have to look at your own face," Anya explained, honestly expressing the depth of her insecurity.
The Queen's Gambit star is an exceptional talent in many respects. She has a photographic memory - while other actors have to spend hours learning their scripts, she only has to read them once.
While her love life in The Queen's Gambit is somewhat turbulent, she seems to have found a long-term relationship in real life with photographer Ben Seed.
Despite her opinions, Anya accepts how most people see her: "I've made it a habit in my life not to turn down compliments, so if someone says I look pretty today, I'll just say thank you."
