Academy Award nominee and The Goldbergs star George Segal has died
Santa Rosa, California - George Segal, best known for his roles in movies such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Owl and the Pussycat, and The Bridge at Remagen, passed away at the age of 87.
The actor died on Tuesday morning in Santa Rosa from complications of a bypass operation, according to a statement by wife Sonia Segal quoted in People Magazine and Hollywood Reporter, among other outlets.
"The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery," it said.
Segal, who was born in Long Island, New York, starred in a number of comedies, but is best known for his role in the 1966 film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, in which he co-starred with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
For his work on the movie, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Most recently, the 87-year-old played the role of Albert "Pops" Solomon in the comedy series The Goldbergs for the past eight years.
"Today we lost a legend," producer Adam Goldberg (50) wrote on Twitter. "It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal's amazing legacy."
"I will miss his warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship. He was a wonderful human," Segal's agent, Abe Hoch, said in a statement provided to CNN. He described Segal as a close friend and client.
