Lucia DeClerck has seen a lot of dark times in her life, such as living through both world wars and the death of three husbands, and was diagnosed with Covid-19 on her 105th birthday.

One month later, she's Covid-free, with doctors attributing her recovery partially to the fact she received the vaccine just one day before being diagnosed.

But DeClerck has a different reason in mind – one soaked in gin. Besides constant prayers with her rosary gripped tightly in her hands, DeClerck has another daily ritual that she believes amped up her immune system.

Every day, she eats nine golden, gin-soaked raisins - something she's done for the better part of her very long lifetime.

if it works, it works

At first, her two sons and five grandchildren thought nothing of her habitual gin-soaked treat, thinking it was just another off-beat thing that Ms. DeClerck did. But after she beat Covid-19 at the ripe old age of 105, they started to change their minds.

Her granddaughter, Shawn Laws O’Neil, told the New York Times "We would just think, ‘Grandma, what are you doing? You’re crazy. Now the laugh is on us. She has beaten everything that’s come her way.”

After living through the Spanish Flu and now beating Covid-19, her kids and grandkids are in awe of the centenarian that made it through two of the most deadly pandemics of the past century.
