Shot jackpot: Ohio announces first $1 million vaccine lottery winner
Cincinnati, Ohio - Now, that's what you call a real win-win situation.
On May 13, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced some pretty exciting news. In an effort to get more people vaccinated against Covid-19 and to increase the state's inoculation rate, every immunized person is given the opportunity to win a sizable amount of money.
Wednesday night the first winners were announced on live TV.
Abbigail Bugenske, from the Cincinnati area, earned the $1 million prize, while Joseph Costello from Dayton got the full-ride college scholarship.
Abbigail's mother, Lisa Bugenske, spoke to FOX 8 and said the announcement of the win overwhelmed the entire family. The young woman, who is currently working as an engineer in Silverton, received her shot prior to the drawing's announcement and is eager to spread the word about the importance of getting vaccinated.
After winning a scholarship to any state university, 14-year-old Joseph Costello posed with DeWine.
"Congrats, Joseph! You just won a full-ride college scholarship! If you're between 12 and 17 years-old and had at least one dose of the vaccine, you could be next!," the Republican tweeted.
The next winners will be announced on Memorial Day!
The Northmont High School student, who intends to attend the University of Dayton, Miami University, or Ohio State University, spoke with NBC 4.
"I'm very happy my scholarship is taken care of, but still taking in the moment about it."
His parents, Rich and Colleen, encourage people to participate in Vax-A-Million. "You don't have anything to lose. You're going to be vaccinated and you might win a free ride to school."
According to Politico, over 2.7 million adults have already signed up for the $1 million prize and more than 104,000 children aged 12 to 17 have entered the college scholarship drawing.
The state of Ohio is still giving out $4 million in prizes as well as four scholarships. The next winners will be announced on Memorial Day, May 31.
