Shark attacks 9-year-old boy bodysurfing in Miami Beach
Miami Beach, Florida - What was supposed to be a happy holiday trip for the Weiskopf family from Minnesota turned into an absolute nightmare in a matter of minutes.
When Kristine and Ren Weiskopf arrived in Miami Beach, their 9-year-old son Jay could hardly wait to jump into the water.
Kristine said she and Jay were only swimming for a few minutes when she noticed something was off.
"I was holding his hand the whole time and he was kind of body surfing a little bit and he had fallen on his stomach," Kristine told Local 10 News.
When she helped him up, the mother noticed a chunk of skin was missing from her son's shoulder.
"He just said, 'Ow,' and I looked down and there was about a 4-foot gray shark just kinda swimming away," she told the news channel.
The panicked mother didn't lose any time, picking up her son and rushing back to the beach.
When the firefighters arrived on the scene, they took Jay to the hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery to close the large wound.
After a successful surgery, doctors were still worried about Jay getting an infection. But they told his parents they were optimistic he would be better soon because of his young age.
And they were right: Kristine on Tuesday shared that her son was making a "remarkable" recovery.
"He's doing remarkably well and already has good range of motion, and no infection. We'll be leaving the hospital in a couple hours and will try to enjoy what's left of our vacation," she wrote on Facebook.
The family can now breathe a sigh of relief.
"We thank God that he didn’t take his life. That he’s gonna be OK," the boy's father Ren said.
