Rat rodeo: man says he hears rodents running under his roof all night long

Liverpool, UK - Stephen Haddock is a Brit with a big problem: he can't sleep at night because his apartment has become infested with rats, and his landlords haven't done a thing about it.

The 40-year-old lives in a rented apartment in Liverpool, where he can hardly get any peace and quiet, because rats have spread throughout the house and make a lot of noise, especially at night, just when Haddock wants to sleep.

The animals have "conquered" the attic, so that their noises are clearly audible when the Brit lies in his bed. For hours, the rodents run around above his head.

He has been fighting with the property managers for months, the tenant told the Liverpool Echo. He believes an unaddressed hole at the back of the property is how the rats are getting in.

However, he said the property management company, Riverside Housing, had "fobbed him off" on several occasions, continuing to ignore his pleas for help.

Additionally, a gate is broken, and trash from the alleyway behind the property has been pulled into the gap behind the gate, creating a literal smorgasbord of food debris, refuse, and rotting things for the rats to feast on. He said that because the gate is broken, it's not possible to clean out the trash, which includes dirty diapers. The rats would gorge, then move into the apartment to nest in the attic right above his bed.

Haddock told the paper, "It makes me not feel safe in my home, which is horrible, it makes me not want to be here."

According to Riverside Housing, they reached out to Haddock several times, and either he was not available, or he got aggressive with the representatives.

He admitted that he was frustrated, especially when it wasn't clear who would have to bear the costs for paying for the poison for the rats. He said that the management company made it seem like it was his fault and that he would have to cover the cost of the service.

However, there has since been movement on the matter since Haddock has spoken with the media, with a spokesperson for Riverside Housing saying that they are working with local organizations to stop illegal trash dumping behind his home.

They have also repaired the hole and cleaned up the trash heap.

The representative added: "Now moving forward, we are working with him to get the rat problem resolved as quickly as possible, along with agreeing actions to take, his responsibilities, behavior and expectations going forward."

Hopefully, Haddock will be able to sleep peacefully with no dreams of rats running overhead!
