The dispatch also noted that state troopers and officials from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game would be to traveling to the area as soon "as weather conditions allow."

Polar bear attacks are rare

According to the National Park Service's website, the polar bear population in Alaska is estimated to be between 4,000 and 7,000.

But fatal polar bear attacks are rare occurrences, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The last time a polar bear killed someone was in 1990. Then, the animal killed a man in the North Slope village of Point Lay, which is much further north than the village of Wales.

Scientists found that the animal showed signs of starvation.
