Lamb of Dog: golden retriever steps in to adopt abandoned farm animal
Nottinghamshire, UK - After this lamb was abandoned by its mother, a caring dog stepped in as a replacement maaama!
The life of Benny the lamb started off quite sadly. Sheep are only capable of caring for two babies a time, and when they give birth to triplets (which is fairly common), the weakest of the three will always be rejected.
Known as a "bum lamb," farmers have two options for the babies: find a mother who has just one offspring and in the hope that she accepts a second, or bottle-feed the lamb themselves.
For farmers with several thousand sheep to manage and dozens of bum lambs each season, hand-rearing babies isn't always feasible. Fortunately, things turned around for Benny in the unlikeliest of ways.
A British TikTok user who runs an account for her three adorable dogs touchingly shared that Benny had been adopted by one of them, Lily.
After being rejected, baby Benny was quite depressed and would not eat anything. As Lily had previously had a litter of puppies, she tried to feed him from her dwindling milk supply. Just being able to bond with a mother who groomed him, cuddled him, and kept him safe helped the little lamb rebound.
"She kisses and cleans him and he loves her for it," the animal family's human wrote in the heartwarming TikTok clip. Best check out the video for yourself!
Everyone loves Baby Benny!
Viewers seem to have taken the young lamb's life story to heart: just five days after its release, the clip has already racked up 3.5 million views and 982,000 likes.
In the comments below the post, thousands of users on TikTok are gushing about the Benny's cuteness and Lily's compassing in taking such loving care of her adopted son.
"A sad story with a happy ending," one user summed it up. Another TikToker also angrily added, "I have a problem with bad sheep moms!" A third also joked that Benny is now technically a "sheep dog."
With a bit of supplemental lamb formula, and getting to sleep in a pile of warm golden goodness, Benny is in fine health and growing.
Benny's human parents shared in a recent TikTok video that Benny tromps through the house with the three other full-grown golden retrievers, completely confident that he must be one himself!
