The Floridian had recently purchased a new couch, but soon discovered a 5-foot-long boa constrictor snake hiding inside!

The shocked resident immediately called the police, FOX13 reported.

Several officers arrived on the scene a short time later. Law enforcement then dragged the couch outside the man's condo and placed it on his sidewalk.

Fortunately, the responding officers were soon able to remove the snake from the piece of furniture without being bitten, and headed to the nearest pet store shortly after.

Although the red-tailed reptile is not poisonous, it is capable of strangling its victims. If the couch owner had fallen asleep on the sofa, it could have been a deadly situation.

"Snakes alive!!" the Clearwater Police Department wrote on Facebook. "It’s a jungle out there sometimes."

How did the snake get into the new couch?

It has not been determined exactly how the snake ended up inside the couch, but officers have one theory.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the king boa is an "extremely common" pet in the state. Perhaps the sofa was in another home beforehand.

The animals feed on lizards, birds, and small mammals that live on the ground and in trees. Wildlife officials say the population can self-sustain itself for at least 10 years and they can grow to be 13 feet long.

It is believed that large numbers of king boas may have escaped when reptile dealers' facilities were damaged by hurricanes, like Hurricane Andrew in 1994.

The police department said it was a "call you don't see every day."

Instead of the couch, the uninvited guest is now making a new home at the local pet store.
