The celebrity cat that resided in Griffith Park for years was put down on Saturday after a health evaluation found that he had several severe injuries and chronic health problems.

"Based on these factors, compassionate euthanasia under general anesthesia was unanimously recommended by the medical team at San Diego Zoo Safari Park," the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) explained in a press release.

The lion was captured last week by wildlife officials after he was discovered in the backyard of a Los Feliz home after he had attacked a chihuahua in November.

The lion was tranquilized and transported to a local wild animal care facility where he underwent a thorough diagnostic evaluation.

"The examination also revealed significant pre-existing illnesses, including irreversible kidney disease, chronic weight loss, extensive parasitic skin infection over his entire body and localized arthritis, all of which have led to the unfortunate deterioration in P-22’s overall condition," the CDFW added.

Residents mourn the loss of P-22

Fans of the feline have been sharing their love of the LA mascot on social media. Even state officials have been mourning the loss.

"P-22 was an icon," said California state governor Gavin Newsom in a tweet. "His incredible journey helped inspire a new era of urban conservation, including the world's largest wildlife crossing in CA. I grew up [loving] these cats."

California state representative Adam Schiff also said he was "heartbroken" over the loss, describing the cat as "a magnificent, wild creature, who reminded us that we are part of a natural world much bigger than ourselves."

The Natural History Museum of LA County is currently holding an exhibit in honor of P-22 that gives "the story of LA’s most famous feline."
