Stray dog in terrible agony makes startling transformation
Rajasthan, India - These pictures are hard to bear: this dog was found wandering the streets of Rajasthan, India, full of fear and suffering terrible pain.
The Animal Aid Unlimited rescuers discovered the stray after she was already in extremely bad shape.
Nevertheless, the rescuers were optimistic and carefully lured the poor creature.
With some food, the shy animal was persuaded to take a few steps towards one of the men, who was very gentle as he lifted up the exhausted female pup.
The dog was suffering from a very advanced form of mange and had lost almost all of her fur. But she was considerably worse off than that.
Nellie Belle, as her rescuers called her, had scratched her dry skin, resulting in deep wounds, some of which were already infested with maggots.
The animal rights activists took the dog straight to their center, where vets immediately began treating her.
Stray dog makes an incredible transformation
The Animal Aid Unlimited organization described the encounter on its YouTube channel on Friday: "She kept perfectly still, but stared straight ahead and seemed completely lost. She had been living inside a relentlessly painful body, and her strength had all been spent. That's why saving her life was so incredible for all her caregivers. To see her unthinkable suffering turning to complete relief was nothing short of thrilling."
The vets removed the maggots and worked with powders and special creams to get Nellie Belle's skin back in good condition.
What happened next bordered on miraculous: the dog made a complete recovery, and all her fur came back. The canine looked so different by the end of treatment that you'd think she was a different animal.
The Animal Aid Unlimited team wrote underneath the YouTube video, "You might find yourself saying 'This just cannot be the same dog!' But look deep into her eyes, and you'll see who was hiding there all the time."
The team from India has proven once again that trying to save an animal is worth it – even when it seems almost hopeless.
