According to CBS, the seven-year-old was brutally attacked by the two pit bulls on Tuesday, after the next-door family had asked her and her mother to look after the dogs while they were away.

The two were reportedly having a great time with the animals, before the situation abruptly spiraled out of control.

It's not clear why the pit bulls went berserk out of nowhere, but they suddenly started mauling the little girl and her mother and seriously injured them both.

Eventually, neighbors saw what was happening and dialed 911.

Despite the fact that mother and daughter were rushed to the hospital immediately, it was already too late for the little girl. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Her mother is still in the hospital but in stable condition.

Lieutenant Michael McIver of the Garner PD said in a statement, "This is a horrible tragedy for all involved. Our thoughts and prayers go out to both families and all those who responded."

The dogs were confiscated by Wake County Animal Control and taken to a shelter. Whether the pit bulls will be euthanized is still up in the air.

The incident is being investigated by police, who have confirmed that there is no immediate danger to the public.
