Oldest dog in the world dies: "This sweet boy earned his wings"
Conqueiros, Portugal - The oldest dog in the world, according to the records of the Guinness Book of Records, has died. The old dog lived a record-breaking 31 years.
Earlier this year, Bobi was dubbed the oldest dog in the world by Guinness World Records.
Portuguese media reported Monday that Bobi died at the ripe old age of 31 years old.
"We have better memories of a long life where he was happy and, above all, where he made a lot of people happy, especially his family," Bobi's owner, Leonel Costa, told local media.
Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro, a Portuguese livestock guard dog. The normal life expectancy for this breed is between 12 and 14 years.
Bobi had an amazingly long life, but he almost didn't survive his puppyhood.
The oldest dog in the world almost died as a pup
Bobi was born on May 11, 1992, along with three other pups in a wooden storage shed owned by the Costa family in Conqueiros, Portugal.
Mr. Costa, Leonel Costa's father, decided they couldn't keep the newborn puppies. Leonel, who was eight at the time, said his parents took the pups from the shed while the mother dog, Gira was out.
His parents accidentally left one puppy behind. That puppy was Bobi, per the Guinness World Record's website.
After Bobi was declared the world's oldest dog in February, curious onlookers from around the world came to visit him.
"He died at the age of 31 years and 165 days," according to the Guinness World Records
Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who met Bobi several times, shared the news of his death on Facebook: "Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings.
