Melissa and Byron Thanarayen noticed their tiny dog Chuck was soaking wet. The couple was confused as their other pooch Jessie was completely dry.

The baffled South Africans naturally wanted to know what had happened and checked the video footage from their CCTV cameras. They weren't prepared for what they were about to see.

Melissa and Byron went through the footage until it showed the moment Chuck accidentally fell in their pool. For more than half an hour, the poor animal paddled from one side of the pool to the other, desperately looking for something to hold onto.

"We were stunned," Byron Thanarayen told The Dodo. Luckily, after a few moments, Jessie appears on the scene. Again and again, the four-legged rescuer tried to pull her housemate out of the pool. It seems that Jessie was being careful not to nip Chuck too hard while she tried to get a grip on him.

But the little one kept slipping and swimming to a different spot in panic each time.

A full 34 minutes of struggles later, good girl Jessie finally managed to get a grip on Chuck and pulled him out of the water. Without her help, the tiny dog would probably have drowned.

Their parents couldn't be prouder. "We had no idea Jessie was such a little hero," Byron said.

"I mean, she is a very lovable, caring and warm-natured dog. But we never thought that she had that hero streak in her."

The Thanarayens naturally showed their full gratitude to Jessie: "She received lots of treats and hugs and kisses, and still receives so much attention and appreciation."

"She loves Chuck a lot. I always knew she was a special dog, and this just proves it," Byron added.

The family posted a montage of the events was on Facebook, sharing just how much Jessie meant to them with the words: "Our little hero."
