Bon-chan the tortoise and Japanese man share heartwarming friendship
Tokyo, Japan - Bon-chan the tortoise got lucky with his best mate Hisao Mitani, the older Japanese man regularly taking him on walks through Tokyo streets. Now, the unlikely duo have gone viral on TikTok.
When Mitani Hisao's wife bought her beloved husband a tortoise the size of his palm, she had no idea what she was getting them into.
Though the couple expected the animal to grow a lot, he never seemed to stop. Things came to ahead when he turned ten and suddenly grew so much bigger than they could have ever imagined.
Today, 25 years old later, there's absolutely no doubt: Hisao and his wife are the owners of an African Spurred tortoise, often referred to as the African giant tortoise - and he totally lives up to that nickname.
Bon-Chan the tortoise has become bigger than you'd ever expect
By now, their hero in half-shell weighs around 155 pounds and is just about three feet long. As such, Hisao and his pet Bon-Chan have become well-known in Tokyo's Tsukishima district for slowly but surely taking a walk every single morning.
Now, they're slowly but surely taking over the internet. Most recently, a clip posted by a Japanese grocery store went viral on TikTok and Facebook. In it, Hisao can be seen taking his giant tortoise for a walk.
Normally, Hisao would only need five minutes to cross the distance they take an hour to walk, yet the man slowly and calmly holds pace with his friend. After years of taking the walk, Bon-Chan and his happy human often have to contend with loving fans flocking in for photos.
Giant tortoise Bon-Chan loves to sport colorful sweaters
In the Japanese capital, Bon-Chan has slowly but steadily sneaked his way into everyone's hearts – and that's in large part because of his impeccable sense of style.
In a Facebook video posted by supermarket Sugoi Mart for example, the turtle wears a small crown on his head and three tiny flags on his shell.
On Instagram, the internet sensation can be seen sporting adorable turtle sweaters, of which there seem to be many variations.
And while these tops all look incredibly cute, they also serve a useful purpose: Whenever the temperatures in Tokyo are too low, they help keep Bon-Chan warm.
Mitani Hisao knows that Bon-Chan will outlive him
Mitani Hisao, who is no longer the youngest himself, worries about Bon-Chan when he thinks about the future. He is almost certain that he will only be able to care for him for another ten years or so.
That's why, according to a Facebook post, he is already looking for an "entrusted owner who will love and care for Bon-Chan the way he has all his life."
Until that time comes, though, the two will continue to go on their daily walk and enjoy each other's company.
